Walk around the school. Have a scavenger hunt. Collect:
feather
peel of the bark of a tree
acorns
leaves
piece of moss or grass
leaf
rock
any other nature items you want to add to the list
Devide the class into groups and give each group a magnifying glass. Ask the students to write where they found each item. Tell them to write what they see when they look at their collections under magnifying glasses. Use a microscope and let the children view their treasures.
Penny Cleaner
Materials:
old, dirty pennies
jar of vinegar
shaker of salt
measuring spoons
cloth
mix 6 tablespoons of vinegar with 2 tablespoons of salt in one small dish. Stir contents.
take 3 pennies and put them into the bowl.
observe what happens.
Take out pennies and rinse in water.
rub pennies with soft cloth to dry and buff them.
Ask the children if they know why the pennies cleaned up? Vinegar is an acetic acid and salt is sodium chloride. When mixed together they make hydrochloric acid. It takes dirt off of pennies.
